Growing up in Australia, the ocean has always been a part of her story, shaping her love for sunlit moments and carefree days by the water. Through her limited-edition prints, she distils nostalgia, movement, and emotion, turning fleeting seaside memories into timeless works of art.

1. What makes a beach photo feel more meaningful than just another beautiful landscape?

The beach is my happy place—something I think many people can relate to. Growing up in Australia, I spent so much of my childhood by the ocean, and I think that’s why beach photos feel so meaningful to me. They evoke a sense of playfulness, innocence, and freedom that other landscapes may not. When I’m shooting by the water, I’m always thinking about how to capture the emotion of the moment, because that’s what makes a beach photo unforgettable. It’s like holding onto a little slice of paradise that you can revisit anytime, bringing those feelings right back to the surface.

I love keeping things simple when I’m by the ocean—barefoot in the sand, camera in hand, and only the essentials with me. A good beach towel is one of those things, and I’ve been loving my Sand Society towel. It’s lightweight, sand-free, and just fits effortlessly into those easy, sun-drenched moments.

2. How does looking at beach photos transport us back to the emotions of that moment?
Beach photos are like time machines. When I look at a shot I’ve taken, it feels like I’m right back there, feeling the sand between my toes, hearing the waves, and even smelling the salty air. It’s not just about what you see; it’s about what you feel. Whether it’s the thrill of catching a wave, the quiet reflection of watching the ocean stretch out forever, or simply the pure joy of being at the beach, it’s all captured in that one image. I always get a rush when I can visualise a photo before I even take it. Then, when I finally capture it, it feels like a small victory. Every time I look at it, I feel the same excitement, freedom, and aliveness I did in that moment.

3. What role does imperfection play in making a beach memory feel authentic? Imperfection plays a crucial role in making beach memories feel real and raw. The beach is inherently imperfect. Waves are never the same twice, the sand shifts constantly, and the wind always seems to have its own plan (annoyingly... am i right?). However, it’s the imperfections that make these moments stand out. Whether it's the windblown hair, the feeling of sand sticking to your wet skin, or the blurred motion of a child running through the surf, these details help to tell a story. When I capture a photo of someone riding a wave or a playful moment on the shore, it’s the chaotic beauty of those small imperfections that make it feel genuine. It’s not just about the stillness of the photo; it’s about the life within it.

4. Why do we often take (and keep) more photos at the beach compared to other places?
The beach holds a unique appeal because it’s often associated with relaxation, fun, and escape from everyday routines. It’s a place where we let our guards down and are fully present in the moment. Because these experiences are emotionally significant, whether it's a serene sunset or a fun day with family or friends, there’s an impulse to preserve them. We also tend to take more photos at the beach because it provides such a dynamic backdrop with shifting light, vibrant colours, and plenty of opportunities to capture both spontaneous moments and picturesque views.

5. How have beach photography styles changed over time, and why do classic, sun-drenched images remain timeless? Beach photography has evolved as technology, trends, and cultural influences have shifted. In the past, sun-drenched, warm-toned images dominated, capturing the golden hour and embracing a soft, nostalgic glow. Today, with the rise of editing tools and filters, there's a greater variety in how beach scenes are captured, from high-contrast, dramatic shots to minimalist, moody ones. However, the timeless appeal of those classic sun-drenched images remains because they evoke a sense of warmth, freedom, and tranquillity that continues to resonate universally. They symbolise the idealised vision of beach life; simple, joyful, and unhurried, making them always relevant, no matter the era

In the end, beach photos resonate because they not only capture the beauty of the landscape but also the emotions, memories, and imperfections that make each moment by the ocean unique, reminding us why we keep coming back to them.
